A member of the Grossulariaceae family, the black currant bush (Ribes nigrum) has been used in traditional medicine for quite sometime. All parts of the black currant bush have been decocted for traditional medicine including its leaves, roots, fruit, and bark. The seed of the Black Currant comes from the fruit, and the Oil is then extracted from the seed. Though the Black Currant is most commonly known as a natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) this plant also contains high levels of vitamins, antioxidants, and polyphenols. It is said to be beneficial for healthy growth of hair, nails, and skin.
